Traditional ink wash on paper mounted to silk. One is unmounted to silk.

Scroll 1 (Left): Monochromatic landscape depicting dramatic mountain gorge with waterfalls, rocky cliffs, and sparse vegetation rendered in traditional Chinese literati style. Small figures visible in the foreground provide scale. Signed with calligraphic inscription and two red seals. Mounted on golden-tan silk with simple white paper border reinforcements.

Scroll 2 (Center): Autumn mountain landscape painted in ink and light color showing towering peaks, autumn trees in rust tones, and a small dwelling nestled in the valley. Delicate brushwork with warm, golden tonality. Signed "Kitashū" (北洲) with inscription and red seal. Mounted on dark green-gold patterned silk.

Scroll 3 (Right): Zen calligraphy (zenga) in bold cursive script reading vertically in spontaneous, dynamic brushwork. The minimalist composition embodies the Zen aesthetic of simplicity and directness. Signed with red seal. Mounted on sage-green silk with golden-tan brocade borders. Some edge wear visible.

All three scrolls are stored in bamboo cases (tomobako) with calligraphic inscriptions, some in fitted wooden boxes. The works span different traditions—detailed landscape painting and Zen calligraphy—likely dating from the late 19th to mid-20th century.

Variable sizes, approximately up to 6 ft high by up to 24 in wide. Total weight is approximately 3 lbs.

Condition

Discoloration throughout. Some foxing. Scratches and scuffs and has holes. Some lift between material layers and backing loss. Creasing throughout.
