A Study of a Young Man by the River, 1958. Painting is a study on art board, likely painted en plein air. Painting is not signed, and is framed. 

Born in Novosurino, Moscow pr., 1917. Studied at Moscow Polygraphic Institute 1931–35. Moscow art Institute 1936-42. Began exhibiting in 1938. Important shows include “All – Union Art Exhibition,” Moscow, 1955; “Soviet Russia,” Moscow, 1960. Specialized in thematic paintings and portraits. Well known works include The Salute (1945); Immortality (Breast, 1941) (1959-60). Taught at Moscow Architecture Institute and Surikov Art Institute from 1960 on. Prominent contributor to socialist realism in the 1940s and 50s. The works of Tolkunov are now in private collections in Italy, England, Germany, and the United States. His works are listed in the Dictionary of 20th Century Russian and Soviet Painters 1900 –1980 by the Britain scholar, Matthew Cullerne Brown.

Painting is in good condition. Small spot in lower left with missing pigment. Five inch scratch on mid right side and through the tree. Frame is chipped throughout.

Painting is approximately 18.5 inches x 13 inches. Frame is approximately 25.5 inches x 19.75 in x 1.75 inches.
