This handscroll presents a poem by Rai San'yō (頼山陽, 1780-1832), one of Japan's most celebrated Confucian scholars, historians, and poets of the late Edo period. The text is executed in flowing semi-cursive script (行書/xingshu) in black ink, demonstrating confident, rhythmic brushwork characteristic of the scholarly tradition.

Rai San'yō was particularly renowned for his Chinese-style poetry (kanshi) and his historical writings. His poems were widely admired and frequently transcribed by calligraphers both during his lifetime and posthumously, making works featuring his poetry highly collectible.

The scroll includes a red seal stamp and is signed "Shuizhong Meicai" (水中梅彩), indicating this is a later transcription of San'yō's poem rather than an original autograph work. The calligraphy is written on cream-colored paper with natural aging and some foxing, mounted with tan silk end panels and wooden rollers with glass knobs.

The scroll is stored in a fitted wooden box with sliding lid, accompanied by a paper label identifying the contents as a work related to Rai San'yō. The traditional handscroll format (手卷/shoujuan) was particularly favored for literary works in East Asian tradition.

Dating likely to the 20th century based on materials and presentation, representing the continued appreciation and transcription of Rai San'yō's celebrated poetry.

Scroll with box is approximately 13.25 in H x 3.75 in W x 3 in D. Weighs approximately 1 lbs 7 oz.

Condition

Wear to box and scroll. Scroll is missing end pieces from the core. Brocade has some loose threads. Discoloration throughout.
