Original leaf from C. Plyniise CundinatuÊPliny the Elder (Gaius Plinius Secundus). Printed on laid paper. Some light folds and creasing. Approx. dimensions: 17.5 in. H. x 22.5 in. W. Weight: 1 lbs. Paper has creases on left side and lower left corner.ÊBackground: Stanley S. Slotkin was a successful Los Angeles businessman who owned the medical and party supply rental company Abbey Rents. He was also an avid collector of antique Bibles and other rare books, amassing hundreds of thousands of books which he also regularly donated to various museums, universities, churches, and libraries across the United States. In the 1960s, Slotkin began to donate individual leaves from books to institutions rather than whole works, as he felt intact books were too often locked away where they could not be seen. He dismembered a number of books, and donated sets of pages to any institution that would agree to display them publicly. He was also heavily interested in archeology, cosmetic medicine, and recreational diving and contributed philanthropically to numerous causes throughout his life.

Available payment options

We accept credit card, PayPal, Zelle, cash and wire transfers for payment. There is a 3.5% convenience fee on all credit card and PayPal payments. Please email info@hughesauctions.com to request bank information for wire transfers.

Winning bidders are responsible for all costs to ship their items, unless otherwise stated. We offer in-house shipping and will ship using UPS, FedEx, or USPS. Hughes is a small company that offers in-house shipping as a convenience to our buyers. In-house shipping can take up to three weeks. If you need shipping sooner, please use a third-party shipping company in our area. We are happy to provide you with a list of local shippers that you can contact.

After the auction, we will send a text and email for you to choose shipping or local pick up. If you intend to use your own third party shipper, please select the LOCAL PICK UP option and email us to arrange a time for your shipper to pick up your items. We charge for packing your items if your third party shipper cannot pack the item for you.

Local Pick Up is at 8059 Foothill Blvd, Sunland, CA 91040 and for this auction will be available Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 10:00am - 2:00pm or by appointment only.

Hughes shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (10) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within ten (10) days from the date of sale, Hughes will impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a daily storage charge of $10 per lot. If the lot has not been removed from the premises within 30 days, the lot is considered abandoned.
